We finally ate some insects!

Though we didn't end up eating any guinea pig in Peru, Jen remained excited at the prospect of eating insects when we got to SE Asia. "They're like little robots!" "It just makes so much sense to eat them!" "You know how I like a crispy snack--these will be great!"

Well, here we are, but when the time came, she realized that really, insects just don't appear all that appetizing, despite the iron clad logic in support of eating them. I was still curious, though, so today I bought 20 Baht worth of crickets and grubs (way too much, as it turns out), and had a little taste!

Here are a few of the morsels in question:

And here is a video of me eating them. (For all you facebook folks (hi facebook folks!), you'll need to go to our blog to see it at: http://weareramblingman.blogspot.com/ ).

Also, I know I incorrectly refer to the crickets as grasshoppers near the end of the video. Though there were grasshoppers on offer, all I can say is that eating the grubs must have disoriented me.

In the end, though the crickets actually tasted pretty good, they're not quite a crisply snack I'll be craving much. (Afterwards I ate the breaded deep-fried shrimp we bought from the neighboring street vendor. They're like the insects of the sea, and far more delicious.)

I love the "grubs are not tasty" face :).

Were they cooked, your mom asks hopefully...

The crispy-chile-spiced bowl of little crickety creatures I had in Beijing were overrated, too.

I loved the Jen laughter accompanying that face...:-)

By the way, it gives a whole new meaning to the kid rhyme "Nobody likes me,everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat worms--long ones, fat ones, little tiny skinny ones...

No need to thank me. :-)

I've always thought I could probably manage to munch on insects as a challenge to myself, but after watching you - no, I don't think so. It will have to remain one of those cultural rifts that I cannot cross!

We've enjoyed your adventures! Jan Kornberg

Lemongrass ay? I'll have to remember that the next time I feed a BEARDED DRAGON! I wonder what you call a vegetarian who makes exceptions for BUGS!
